September Sampler

Yesterday I realised I had not got around to picking hips and haws which was one of the things on my September to-do list. The council have cut our hedgerows back in such a way that most of the haws (hawthorn berries) are now out of reach. Hips seem thin on the hedge this year too. I usually have plenty in my garden but there were very slim pickings. I padded my hips and haws out with sedum and michaelmas daisies.

And now it is October. Here at The Quince Tree we are pursuing different interests among which are; One Direction, halloween costumes, sleeping, drumming, passing the driving theory test, finding a job (not sure this is really an interest), a big yellow motorbike and quinces.

  1. Thank you for the inspiration - I shall go and pick a posy from my garden at lunchtime - I have some very similar flowers. I hope to get it indoors before the rain comes!

  2. May we see the big yellow motorbike, please please please? You could always balance a vase of pretty flowers on the saddle to make it relevant to the blog.

    1. I looked. I'm not showing this to my husband. He used to have a Royal Enfield. I'll never hear the end of it. I used to ride pillion to college and once had a boyfriend whose bike my parents forbade me to ride on. He was not a suitable boyfriend. (He was arrested for syphoning petrol out of his mother's car for the bike. My father spotted that news in the local paper and that was the end of that relationship.)

  9. Beautiful signs of autumn to be found hereabouts, Sue. Those colors just sing!

Yesterday, I returned to your colcannon recipe, using Tuscan kale I bought yestereday at the farmers market. And Bacon, of course. It was delicious, and the reheated leftovers are going to be even better.

Thank you once again for that recipe. xo

  11. Well that's a spectacular posy nonetheless. And so much autumn colour in your sampler - the gold, reds and purples shine through.

My almost-seven year old currently adores One Direction and learning about castles, in seemingly equal measures. x

  12. Sue - a motorbike! Terribly dangerous but brilliant fun. Thanks again for that chelly recipe, I tracked down my wild crab and made four jars. It is lovely but pretty hot hot hot! I may have been over generous with the chillies. Just the thing to ward off the cold.
