~ My Christmas cake is in the oven. I toyed with the idea of making something a bit different this year. Then I thought that as it has been a whole year since we last ate Christmas cake we didn't really need anything new. So Mary Berry it was.
~ I can't stop taking pictures of the berries in my neighbour's front garden. Here they are bejewelled with raindrops.
~ I took the opportunity of George's absence to make my favourite soup - tuna, sweetcorn and cheese chowder. George despises tuna.
It's a recipe that has its origins in a recipe from The Tightwad Gazette by Amy Dacyczyn. It's easy to make. Melt a lump of butter in a pot and fry gently a chopped onion and a celery stick (I use my veg hash) until soft. Stir in some spices if liked (I use smoked paprika), then add a heaped tablespoon of flour, stir to make a paste. Gradually stir in about 15 fl oz of stock. Add two grated carrots and a drained tin of tuna. Stir to break up the tuna. Add about 15 fl oz of milk, about 2 handfuls of sweetcorn and the same of grated cheese. Simmer all for about 20 mins. Season and serve.
~ I am always surprised how much the absence of one of my children changes the family dynamic. George's absence somehow brings Tom and Katie closer together. They are much more tolerant of each other than George is of either of them (but especially of Katie) so much so that I was quite happy to leave Katie under Tom's charge while we went to the cinema last night. Happier than I would have been leaving George in charge.
~ Skyfall is just fantastic. Everything about it was perfect; Adele's theme song, the spectacular action sequences, the great visuals, superb acting, plot twists and turns, witty one-liners, some great surprises for the Bond fan. Daniel Craig is the best Bond and Sam Mendes has made the best Bond film.
~ The Compound Word Project is a bloggy party game which Ali of Domestcali is hosting. She's hoping it will help put new life into the blogging community. Do have a look, I think it is going to be great fun.
