This is the first time in 45 years that I can remember snow on my birthday. It is actually falling as I type.
I've had some lovely presents. I would like to be able to say that my family chose them all by themselves. But they didn't. I sent C an email with a link to this.
I mentioned to my sons that I'd seen some gorgeous Christmas baubles in the sale at Past Times. I suggested that a single Christmas tree ornament would make a great present each year for someone with a December birthday. It could be a new tradition I said.
This was from elder son. Younger son has forgotten. Something to do with him thinking there were 31 days in November. I told my daughter that I liked Body Shop soaps. She gave me a bar of coconut soap and a handmade card embellished with purple feathers and sequins.
C is not good at cards. He panics (so he says) when confronted with row upon row of greetings cards and falls back on bland designs of flowers with appliquéed card petals. At least it wasn't from Moonpig. No matter how many times I bang on about my favourite artists and show him examples of their work he never remembers. Fortunately I have a godfather who regularly sends me cards I love and which I keep and use as bookmarks. Ravilious, Bawden and this year Mark Hearld.
I bought myself my very own countdown to Christmas calendar. Only I am allowed to open the windows. It's mine. My personal birthday tradition.
C had the day off. We went into Worcester to do a bit of shopping.
It all looked very festive.
This Victorian postbox is just in front of the cathedral. I save letters especially to post in it.
We drove out to a country pub for lunch where we sat in front of a huge crackling fire while it snowed outside. I ate their speciality- treacle hollygog. Nigella has a recipe for this in Nigella Express, she calls it Roly Poly pudding. It is pastry spread with golden syrup then rolled up. Milk is poured over and it is baked until the milk and syrup caramelise. Nigel Slater talks about the right food at the right time, well this was it.
Later at home I made myself a birthday cake, after all no one else was going to. I made a mango and passionfruit pavlova. A pavlova is perfect for any celebration.
I have had two puddings today. I can do that because it is my birthday. OK?
:o)
Happy Birthday lovely lady!! Looks and sounds like you have had a fab day and yeah, men, they don't really get it do they? I have long given up being expectant and just tell him straight now. Some beautiful gifts and the pavlova look gorgeous. x
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday Sue ~ It sounds like you have had a lovely day. It's my husbands birthday today too and as the schools have been closed in Scotland all week I had some very willing helpers to help me make a birthday cake. Enjoy the rest of your day :O)x

ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday. What lovely goodies. And snap! We have the same calendar. I bought it once before and it is absolutely the nicest one on the market. I open the windows. No one else is interested. But I also put a box of chocolates beside it and people are generally quite interested in those.
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday Sue.
ReplyDeleteGlad to see you have enjoyed it so far.
Have a great evening.
Best Wishes
Chris
What a lovely birthday you've had, and you've depicted in photos very well. Did it seem extra special because it snowed?

ReplyDeleteHappy birthday, Sue. I caught the St Jude's exhibition at Bankside the other week, you'd have loved it. Wish somebody had been Christmas shopping for me there (like you, I'd be very happy with the lovely cards they were selling! or even a tea-towel!)
ReplyDeleteI entered my name in the prize draw for an Angie Lewin print ... well, you never know!
All my family say I'm 'difficult to buy for' which I think means that there's nothing much I want in Boots!

ReplyDeleteJoyeux anniversaire!! Sounds like you had a lovely time!!! Men never get hints to they?! Maybe we should write wish-lists and leave them in the house in random places!!
ReplyDeleteTwo puddins is definitely acceptable - I actually think it's necessary!!! xx
Belated Birthday wishes. Treacle hollygog - I must get that recipe, it's just the sort of thing I like to eat. Will you be going to the Worcester Christmas Fayre? I went several years ago but was a little disappointed by the stalls. Stay warm.
ReplyDeleteTracey
Looks like a lovely day! It was my birthday yestesrday too, I was 24. I didn't have two puddings, but I did have two starters (all involving cheese) at the restaurant. :) First time I can remember snow on this day too.

Happy Birthday Molly Laurel!
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday Sue! I love Mark Hearld's work too, we have some of his prints from when his work was cheaper, he's getting famous now isn't he. Your advent calendar is fantastic! Beautiful! And I love that it doesn't have chocolate in the windows, just beautiful pics. Love Vanessa xxx
ReplyDeleteHi it's ME Where did you get the lovely calender from? I hope all your birthday cards are as nice as the one from your godfather.
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday (we're twins!).

Happy birthday Sue!! I love the necklace....(and that pavlova sounds delight!). I hope you had a lovely time, Pati x
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday, Sue! I am jealous of your snowy birthday - it all looks so beautiful. So, just to keep the balance, we ate mango tonight, too... fresh stuff... from trees just down the road. :-)
ReplyDeleteGlad you had a great day.
Caz :)
Happy Happy day to you. What beautiful gifts and treats.
ReplyDeleteI also have a husband who gets lots of subtle hints and I also make my own cake!
But at least that way you know it's going to be gorgeous.
Jo x
It's perfectly fine by me if you have two puddings on your birthday but only if I can join
ReplyDeletein - one day later - oh what the heck - let's say two puddings are fine any old day. Happy Birthday!
By the way - this is just an idea and probably a naff one but if I were you and liked nice arty cards - I'd buy a stash next time I was in an art gallery shop and just give 'em to them indoors to give back to me - now I'm older I don't care how I get what I want so long as I get it - LOL!!
A pavlova as a birthday cake? That is such a brilliant idea.
ReplyDeleteMark Hearld is one of my favourites too.
Happy happy birthday Sue xxx
Happy birthday Sue!
ReplyDeleteGlad you had a lovely day, my birthday is on the 6th Monday, I can't remember ever having snow either, I reckon it will still be here.
Funny my little daughter keeps saying she will put candles on my cake, like you I will have to make myself one, as noone else will :(
And snap! I am making myself a Pavlova too, I will be blogging it, haven't decided on my topping yet... You are right its perfect for any occasion, I will be doing one for Xmas day too, as none of us likes Xmas pud.
Enjoy the rest of your day. x
Happy Birthday - I love your bauble, gorgeous (perfect gift for Brits abroad).

ReplyDeleteDear Sue,
ReplyDeleteHappy belated Birthday!!! Wish you a beautiful Weekend and send a lot of Greetings to you...
Marion
Bum! I turn my back for a few days and you go and have a birthday! It sounds like you had a lovely time and I'm very pleased for you. Happy Birthday for then. Oh, and I particularly like the bauble, the calendar and the postbox. A Penfold if I'm not mistaken?
ReplyDeleteI haven't been following for very long, so I didn't know we shared a birthday!! Snap!! Glad you enjoyed yours so much. Body Shop featured in mine, too. Even coconut ;)
ReplyDeleteThanks for having an "English version" fo birthday, almost as if was for me - I had a Swiss version that included Zurich in the fairytale snow, very pretty and satisfying, so I think you would have enjoyed that, too!
And your present to me was the hollygog recipe. I know what's for tea.
Thanks - I really enjoy reading about your life and doings. And Happy Belated Birthday ;))
