Just Now I Am....

I'm sure you realise that  'Just Now I Am...' is a euphemism for 'some random pictures I took this week cobbled together into a blog post. 


Just now I am.....

~ Not making marmalade. Yes, the marmalade season is in full swing, it is spread all over my instagram feed but I am not joining in this year. The jar in the picture above is the third of my batch of eight from last year. There are also two jars of lime marmalade from the year before. Clearly we  will not be running out of marmalade before January 2016. In fact I am seriously considering doing no preserving at all this year. Why?

3 apricot jam
3 blackcurrant jam (july 2013)
3 quince jelly
2 crab apple jelly (august 2011)
2 damson jelly (september 2011)
6 damson chutney
2 mint jelly

That's why. We just don't get through it. Not quite true, we get through the chutney but jams and jellies not so much. That said I quite fancy making some blood orange curd when I can find some blood oranges but that will be a very small batch.



~ Finding January colour and sparkle .
~ Walking everyday. Well, every week day. Mostly.


~ Reading The Runaways by Elizabeth Goudge and finding it delightful.
~ Listening to The Diary of Samuel Pepys with huge enjoyment.
~ Thinking about baking some gingerbread this afternoon.
~ Making use of some rather leathery smoked salmon trimmings in this kedgeree.

Chop a small onion finely and soften in butter, stir in a spoonful or two of curry paste or powder. Add enough cooked basmati rice for however many people you are feeding and stir it around in the spicy buttery onions. Toss in smoked salmon (I used 250g for four people). Add a handful of peas and handful of sultanas. Stir in some double cream if you have any (I did) and lastly place halved hard boiled eggs on top. We ate ours with hot mango chutney.

Any smoked fish is great in kedgeree.


~ Looking forward to opening a bottle of red this evening.

  3. Mmmm! My mum used to make great kedgeree - we lived in Singapore when I was a baby and she picked up a few culinary tips during that time. I make it - but not as well as she used to!

    On the marmalade front - you know I have already done mine this year - but as it's the first year for decades that I have done any preserving (apart from my wild garlic pesto and oil) I think I should revel in shouting it loud and clear! (I may run out of steam later in the year when jamming is imminent)

  5. I only ever make preserves in tiny batches as I have little space to store them and big doubts in my own abilities to get everything sterile enough to guarantee proper preservation. But the hubs would be ecstatic if I made him some marmalade - perhaps next week… If I'm in a good wife mood.

  6. Sue, this post has made me so hungry...and this is just after I have finished a nourishing bowl of oatmeal with raisins and milk.

    Kedgeree is a dish I know of, but have never prepared, or even tasted. I think that 2015 will be the year!

    Your marmalade, jam, jelly, et al. collection is most impressive. I'm lucky to have some friends who also like to make these delicious spreads and share the results with me.

    No marmalade-making here this year either: no Seville oranges to be seen and I just can't be bothered, to be honest. Although I do envy you that stock of lovely preserves - so much better-tasting than the bought stuff.

  8. I think I will have to give jam and marmalade making a miss for this year too, I've just found a couple of jars date 2012 at the back of the cupboard!!

    I love kedgeree, it always seems you get a really tasty meal from so few ingredients :-)

  9. I bought Seville oranges this morning to make marmalade tomorrow. We get through our jars very quickly indeed. I'm also looking forward to opening a bottle of red tonight!

  10. That's a nice easy-peasy kedgeree recipe. I've never been that fond of it done with smoked haddock, but smoked salmon (which I always have in the freezer) sounds a very good substitute.
    My late Mum used to make 100 jars of marmalade in a three-week marmalade-making marathon at this time of the year, all cut up by hand, too. 50 jars for us (based on usage of one jar per week) and 50 for herself (based on some usage for her but most given away to friends and neighbours.) I really associate the smell of marmalade with this annual marathon when her house smelt wonderful!

      That reminds me of my mum's marmalade making at this time of year. Not quite as many jars though! She would stay home from church to make it and my Dad would call that Sunday the first Sunday in Marmalade. You prob have to be a church goer to get that reference... Sarah

  11. I thought exactly the same thing this year! I have too many jars of marmalade, jam and chutney hiding in the cupboard so need to get munching.,.probably got enough stock to be lazy on the preserve front for quite some time! Better go have some toast! Katie x

  12. Sue, I have the opposite problem - last year's marmalade was gobbled up (mainly be me) in record time and I need to make some more. No, I want to make some more. :-) You could always give away some preserves as gifts if you're overrun with them.

  14. I'm opting out this year, too. Have barely started on last year's, largely because I prefer Marmite. But I feel strangely to drawn to making some candied peel. Any advice, Sue?

    2. Mary, I made candied peel for the first time at Christmas. I had a good old google, and adapted about 6 different recipes, but it was great fun, and the candied peel was delicious!

  15. I bought my Seville oranges this morning and froze them until I have time to make marmalade. We ALWAYS eat all our marmalade but have a cupboard full of fab home-made jam, so an embargo on jam this year. I like lighter flavored marmalade so my husband makes his own thick, sticky and dark marmalade which is just for him. Both satisfied= marital bliss.

  17. We don't eat masses of jam either, I have to make an effort by making things like scones, bakewells, rice pudding and jam tarts. There is a recipe (one of Nigella's) that uses a jar of jam in making a cake, actually in the batter. I've used that for a particularly strong grape jelly that was a bit overpowering on its own. I think she uses something exotic like wild cherry or plum, but it worked fine with overpowering grape.

    I have a similar problem with preserves - I love the idea, but we just don't eat it all. Re: kedgeree - have you tried Jamie Oliver's spicy kedgeree? OMG - no other recipe will do for us now. Also, just made your elderflower drizzle cake recipe - I think I will use a smaller tin in future because it sank, plus I found the lemon drowned out the delicate elderflower flavour. May make adjustments!! Cheers from Jane in Australia.

    1. I haven't tried the JO recipe Jane, to be honest I wouldn't follow a recipe for something I already know how to make, I'm sure it's very tasty though. Better luck with the elderflower cake - try any plain sponge cake recipe that you already know works for you and add the elderflower and/or lemon to taste.

  19. Your posts are always an inspiration. To cook, but really to eat. Also inspired to take photos, other than in museums. I have never made marmalade. Once made lemon curd, it was amazing. I did see a Jamie Oliver recipe for clementine curd somewhere.

  20. Love that photo of the marmalade, love it! I bet your homemade jellies and jams are really good, homemade is the best.
    I need to take a photo of all that my Dad canned this summer. He grew it all and harvested it and then, canned it. I think there are over one hundred jars of food (potatoes, green beans, soup, jellies, tomatoes, etc!!) That is so much work.

  22. Looking at your appetising photos of marmalade on toast inspires me to make some of my own. I did a few years ago, but chopped all the peel by hand which I found rather laborious. Perhaps I'll keep a look out for some Seville oranges. Love the sparkly raindrop photo!

  23. I was determined not to make marmalade this year as we've barely touched the 2014 batch while we've been working through jars of 2013. But the Seville oranges are just so blooming hard to resist and for some strange reason there appears to be a box of them sitting in the larder.

  25. The kedgeree looks good - I should really eat more fish and this would also be a good way to use up our eggs (we keep some hens). As for jams and jellies, until all that we have is eaten I will not be making any more. And whenever I do start again I will only make small amounts.

    1. Maybe, but I really don't need any more marmalade. Hopefully by this time next year I will have run out and can enjoy marmalading again.
