Fifty Golden Years

Saturday, 4 May 2013

Fifty years ago today my mum and dad were married. Little did they know then that they were getting married on Star Wars day and I am sure they couldn't care less about it. In fact when dad took my brother and I to see Star Wars at the Gaumont in Birmingham he fell asleep before the end which says something about his good taste. Mum stayed at home which says something about her good sense.

My mum and dad both have plenty of good taste and good sense which they have demonstrated by choosing to be married to each other and to stay happily married to each other for half a century.

They won't be reading this today as they are having fun in Cornwall but I shall send them my love and congratulations anyway along with this selection of golden things for them to enjoy when they return, and I shall try not to dwell on the fact that when one's parents celebrate fifty years of marriage one's fiftieth birthday cannot be far away.

  6. Congratulations. This is a rare achievement these days. When my husband and I got married 20 years ago, the minister said that it was one of the easiest weddings she'd done in ages. All the parents were still married to their original spouses and no one was feuding with anyone else. What a sad reflection on these times. And by the way, turning fifty is no big deal (as long as you're prepared to watch everything on your body slide downwards).

Nowt wrong with the original Star Wars trilogy......it's the later rubbish George Lucas pumped out that's the problem ;)

  10. Happy anniversary, Sue's parents! I was so glad that mine managed to celebrate their 50th last summer before my dad passed away. And my guess is that I will be turning 50 before you do (in three weeks, to be exact, but who's counting?).

And I agree with Bitsy Beans. Han Solo was darned cute, and Princess L. mighty sassy (and she rocked the cinnamon-bun earmuff hairdo, she did).

  11. Fifty years is a fantastic achievement. I hope that they are having a lovely time in Cornwall. I remember celebrating my Grandparents Golden and Diamond wedding anniversaries. This July they will be celebrating their 70th. It will be a very special time for them and our family.

I hope the basket of quinces is an indicator of this year's harvest for you.
And I know they are supposed to be a weed and every weed killer ad on the telly shows them being tackled but I think dandelions are wonderful little flowers too.

  21. Many congrats to your parents for 50 happy years together. My parents have been married (happily!) for 38 years. Every morning, without fail, my dad brings my mum a cup of tea in bed. Always has done. I think it's sweet.

  23. congraulations to your parents, it doesn't seem possible that people can be married for that long!
it would appear that I will be celebrating that birthday in two weeks time, but i don't want to be that old, dreading all the cards with 50 on them. It just seems sooo old.
