Scenes From a Birthday

Katie turned thirteen today.
She celebrated by acquiring a Facebook account, a great deal of money from various relatives, a great deal of sweets and chocolate from her brothers and some Converse socks.
I made pollo alla diavolo and squid for supper and a vanilla buttermilk birthday cake from How to be a Domestic Goddess.
A very satisfying birthday.

  1. Very Happy Birthday Katie! She looks lovely, I hope that she enjoyed every minute of her special day. The dinner sounds delicious and the cake looks that way too.

Facebook you say? I'm sure she will cope with it.

That's the age I dread for my girls, not least because at the moment I can say, 'No you can't go on Facebook until you're 13!'
    Fab looking cake, too!

    1. Silly me, I thought I could edit it to add my name.

What I said was: "Happy birthday, Katie! I remember my daughter's 13th. Yes, the big thrill was the Facebook account!"

Maybe I'm not old enough to handle a Facebook account myself! LOL!

  17. Happy Birthday Katie - what fantastic socks!

I am dreading 13 and the lack of legal reasons why M cannot have Facebook.

  20. Pretty girl. I assume that is your daughter and not just some random girl from google?
Someone has just given me a copy of the Nigella book, so I may just look this cake up. I feel cakey.
I can't comment on Facebook. I have bad opinions.
But well done on holding out this long, loads of kids seem to get on very early. You are a proper Mum though and does stuff right.

    1. Yes, that is Katie and she gave her permission for me to use the photo. Oh I loathe Facebook and although the argument 'but everyone else has it/does it' doesn't usually sway me I think in this case everyone else really does have it and being part of what everyone else is part of is so important at that age. I don't want these next few years to be filled with unnecessary resentment and misery because she can't have facebook.

    2. No, she will be fiiled with enough resentment and misery about everything else in her life anyway I guess, it goes with being too old to be mothered and too young to run your own life. Teenagers have enough on their plates without being a social leper for not being on Facebook.
Sadly, I think I must agree on this point.

  32. Happy birthday to Katie! She is lovely looking. Nigella's buttermilk cake has been my go-to birthday cake for a few years now. In fact I made one for my father in law yesterday! It keeps beautifully too and doesn't dry out.
