Monthly Sampler July 2012

~ Make jam. I picked about 5 lbs of redcurrants before going on holiday. They are in the freezer waiting for raspberries to be bought to make  redcurrant and raspberry jam

~ Re-read Nigel Slater's Kitchen Diaries in anticipation of volume II being published in September.
There are also new books by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall and Diana Henry to be looked forward to.

~ Continue the war with my daughter over mess made and tasks left undone. Nail varnish is the current battle. I have no objection to her wearing it. I just wish the towels, window sills and furniture didn't wear it as well. I hate the smell of nail varnish remover, am sure it cannot be good for her, and fail to see why she thinks I should buy it for her.

~ Enjoy 'Not Camping' which is due to take place between 15th- 22nd August. I'm planning some lovely things to eat and drink and looking out for something good to read.

  1. Thanks for flagging up Hugh and Nigel's new titles. I have used the Diaries a lot and love Everyday Veg. Have you tried anything by Edith Wharton? I'm newly introduced to her and enjoying The Age of Innocence and looking forward to The Custom of the Country.

  2. Can I assume that the not camping is when all the others head off and you stay behind doing all the things you didnt have time/energy for before? If it is it sounds damn good to me and I just wish I could persuade my Hubby to take the kids off for a week lol

  3. Wish I could send Mother-in-Law off camping, I'd love the house to myself for a few days! If you get bored (ha,ha) the coffee offer still stands.

  5. I am completely with you on the nail polish stance and on the not camping. Now if I could only persuade my husband to take the kids camping. Oh, and I agree with the Edith Wharton recommendation. She's wonderful.

  6. Darn it Sue I had made a resolution no more cookbooks, but Nigel and Hugh deary me such a temptation, two more wouldn't hurt would it? Daughters, I have one here, ,mess made and tasks never done, not even started, tell me about it and she is 23!! she is actually worse then my son in a strange sort of way. I am thinking of putting a sign on the kitchen door, something about if you use it - clean it.

  13. I also have the dreaded nail varnish problem with one of my daughters. A friend of mine recommended giving the problem child an old towel to be used at all times when nail varnishing. It worked for her daughter but mine is of course too lazy to even bother to get the towel out...but you never know, it might work for you!!
