A Goodly Fragrance

Standing in my garden hanging out the washing, I could smell them.
The perfume of quinces is distinctive and delicious.


I wasn't going to pick until October, but I couldn't resist plucking a few, just a few.
They are heavy, generous fruit, satisfying to hold.


I heaped them on a white plate and placed them on the kitchen counter


where their fragrance will surprise and delight me each time I enter the kitchen.
No wonder the Elizabethans used to put quinces in linen cupboards to scent their linen.

    Our tree doesn't give fruit anymore...I'm guessing due to poor drainage and the heavy rains during the winter....
    By the way, I didn't know the Elizabethans used it like that! Impressive!
    In Greece we eat them roasted or -my favourite way- as preserved fruits! Yummy!

  2. Do you have any tips Sue for preparing them...when I chop them they seem to be quite hard and the knife can slip.

  5. There's no way round the hardness of the quince Annabella and that is probably why they have fallen out of favour. I cut them from stem end all the way down into two halves, then I place the halves flat side down on the table so that they are easier to cut.

  8. Beautiful! I have already started on mine ~ in SW France they are ready, have made cheese, jelly, membrilla, pies and sauces as well as marmalade!
    They are indeed a gorgeous fruit!

  9. Forgot to say Sue, that most of the ones I have used thus far have been windfalls, I still have the ones on the tree to ripen more and look all golden and fuzzy! Yours look prettier than mine! LOL!

  14. We had some windfalls and I brought them in last night and sat sniffing and stroking them. Being our first year of finally getting the fruit, we have been unsure of when to pick, especially since everything is so early this year.

    Hi Sue
    I am assuming as they are so hard you cant eat them uncooked? I have had them in Portugal as jelly / spread - never smelt their lovely smell though - will seek them out now. Love your blog by the way - some sweet bloggers out there who i also adore but yours is a little more 'salty' shall we say in the humour!

  17. Hello Rachel, you're right, quinces are not edible raw unless you want to break your teeth. They are also very astringent. If you click on the label 'the quince diaries' on my sidebar you will be able to see what I did with my quinces last year.

  18. Oh oh I just can't get enough of quinces! You know I even dreamt of them this night? (crazy, I know)

    The scent is wonderful, their furry skins so charming and the cooking possibilities!

    I'll start looking for them in the shops today.

  21. Just recently, I discovered that the quince is related to the rose...I did a post on it on my blog (well...about roses really, it is titled "La Vie En Rose").
